Thanks, Matt. It is really a simple idea, isn't it? People don't like a vacuum. They just want answers immediately, and if you give it to them, they're happy. As communicators, we have to be more aggressive than ever before because people today have higher expectations. The internet and social media have changed the perception of "fast."

GREAT post Diane. In three years running communications for a major city electric utility, the smartest thing we ever did was invest in software that allowed customers to see real-time data on when power would be restored. Even for people who had no internet access or otherwise couldn't get connected in a major outage, it was a great tool for media to use to provide information widely on power restoration (and save a lot of inbound customer service calls)!

The "Pluggers" comic in today's paper had this quote: "A plugger believes that a book in the hand is worth two in the Kindle" (see: http://www.gocomics.com/pluggers/2011/03/21/). When my mother phoned me and asked me about it, we were both nonplussed. Even Merriam-Webster online was no help at all. Thankfully you nice folks have brought me up-to-date; and I also realize now that "Kindle" is a proper noun. That's what I get for being out-of-step with technology (sigh)!

Hi Jenn, Thanks for the comment! I have the same issue: My mind just races too fast to keep up with my mouth. (I know! Hard to believe.)
Love the polls on your blog (letschatsoicalmedia.com) by the way!

Love the post. I can particularly identify with the random Valley Girl comments. When I present in an important meeting, I try to relax so I won't sound nervous- and with that comes the former cheerleader/southern accent/ sorority gal- and inevitably come the "likes" "totallys" "awesomes" and "y'alls". I also agree that people may naturally tune out fillers. My other issue is that I have an overly active mind and my speech can't keep up- so it comes out all wrong sometimes. My best coping mechanism is journaling. I've been journaling my thoughts for as long as I can remember. If I can get the thoughts on paper then I can go back and organize accordingly. Once it's all organized and documented-I can present or get the message across more effectively. Great post, I'm looking forward to reading more!

Thanks, Matt! Absolutely, PR is all about two-way communications, as we well know. I'll check out those case studies. I'm always looking for new examples. At DJ, we haven't built anything from scratch, but there has been wide adoption of consumer tools like FaceBook and Twitter. Recently, we started using Yammer to create dialogue. We've been using it to share ideas and knowledge among employees internally.
